A firewall is an essential device to protect your entering and outgoing data on your PC.
ZoneAlarm is a good quality free firewall.
Download it at:
Protect your PC - SCAN IT FOR VIRUSES
Scan your PC online with this free antivirus. You don't have to download anything, just let the antivirus scan your computer.
The site is in French but the antivirus is in English. When the antivirus windows appear, select the hard drives you want to scan and hit the "scan" button.
It may be quite a long process if you only have a 56K modem.
Protect yourself - SEND ENCRYPTED E-MAILS
InterCypher encrypts the text written inside any email client before sending by using a multiple XOR bit shift algorithm. This method is effective at producing a unique series of non-repeatable, alphanumeric characters each time it is executed. The user has the option of adding his or her own password key to increase security.
Easy to use. Grabs text from any email client or editor and immediately encrypts it in place. Keeps the wrong people from reading your email. InterCypher can keep a record of email addresses and do mass email without including recipients lists.
BASIC SECURITY RULES
1- Never access your accounts on computers that are not protected with firewalls and anti-virus programs. Note that these programs have to be regularly (daily is the best) updated to be protected against newly discovered viruses. Ideally, access your accounts only from your secured computer.
2- NEVER access your accounts on public (i.e. cybercafes) computers.
3- ALWAYS make sure that you are really on the site your are accessing (and not on a copy of it).
4- NEVER type your accounts passwords on any other site than the one on which it is supposed to be used. For example, the other day, I found a site that, pretending to offer a mass-payement service, asked for my e-gold passphrase.
5- NEVER reveal your passwords to ANYONE.
WRITE THEM on paper and HIDE THE PAPER.
DO NOT store your passwords on your computer or in any "password-reminder" programs.
USE varied and "unlogical" passwords (for example "ksd84jg8nc55" instead of "myaccount").
DO NOT use the same password for different sites.
